What the difference between a sabot slug and rifled slug?
A sabot slug is what you want to shoot out of a rifled barrel because the barrel will put the spin on the projectile.
A rifled slug is what you want to shoot out a smooth bore barrel.
Because the barrel is smooth, the projectile will not rotate appropriately unless it has rifling on it..
Can any shotgun shoot slugs?
No, not all shotguns are meant to shoot slugs. Non-rifled (smoothbore) shotguns are meant to shoot foster style slugs. Also, be careful with shooting any type of slugs out of older shotguns, or shotguns with a choke, a choke adds restriction which may deform your barrel over time.
What choke should I use for slugs?
It’s important to select a choke tube with little to no constriction. That’s why a cylinder or improved cylinder choke is ideal for use with slugs. These types of chokes have a large enough diameter to shoot slugs without damaging the shotgun barrel or causing harm to the person firing.
Can I shoot 00 buck with full choke?
ADGP G&G Addict. “Full choke was recomended for buckshot up to 00”. So, as long as the ammunition is lead, I can use it then. Okay, cool, thank you!
Do I need a slug barrel to shoot slugs?
In almost all cases, you should only use rifled slugs in smoothbore barrels. If you have a rifled shotgun barrel, you’re going to want sabot slugs.
Can all 12 gauge shotguns shoot slugs?
Yes, all shotguns can shoot slugs within gauge (don’t shoot 20’s in a 12!). I’d change that to “Slugs should not be fired through any shotgun with a choke tighter than Modified”.
Do slugs damage shotgun barrels?
Some companies warn against shooting slugs through their over-bored barrels – I’d follow their instructions on that one. But for normal slugs of the proper gauge and hull length fired in a shotgun in good mechanical condition, no – damage to the barrel from shooting slugs is not going to happen.
What happens if you shoot a slug through a choke?
Yes you can fire a rifled slug through a screw in choke. It’s the same as a fixed choke barrel when it’s screwed in. They usually work best with improved cyl.Do not ever fire your gun without a choke tube in it,it will mess up the threads in the barrel.
Can you shoot a slug through a bird barrel?
The grooves on the side of the rifled slug are there for the slug to swage down in the shotgun barrel. They do not impart a spin on the slug. It is perfectly safe to shoot RIFLED shotgun slugs up to and including full-choke.
Can you shoot buckshot through a choke?
You can shoot buckshot out of any choke.
Can H&R Pardner shoot slugs?
You can shoot both birdshot and slugs through it. Just make sure you use rifled slugs.
Will rifled slugs damage a rifled barrel?
Rifled slugs are designed to impart a spin, albeit less stable, through a smoothbore. Rifled barrels are designed to impart spin on a smooth sabot. The physics of the differing types of spin causes an erratic motion to be imparted upon the slug. Furthermore, the rifled slug could damage the rifled barrel.
Can you shoot rifled slugs through a rifled choke?
Thanks, John P. Slug-gun expert Jeff from NJ says you can shoot the same ammo in a rifled barrel or one with a rifled choke tube. However, due to the shorter length of rifling associated with using the choke tube, it is generally best to use slugs that are the least dependent on a fast spin to achieve their accuracy.
Can you shoot a slug through a full choke?
A standard full choke with standard lead slugs is safe. Don’t matter if they are fixed chokes or interchangeable tubes. You probably won’t get good accuracy. The new sabot slugs or solid copper, really anything but lead, should probably not be used in full choke guns.
Can you shoot a .410 slug through a full choke?
You can safely shoot any STANDARD birdshot, buckshot OR rifled slug through any STANDARD choke from Cylinder Bore to Full. … Accuracy may or may not be as good with slugs through a Full choke as through a looser choke, but some guns shoot great patterns through Full choked guns.
What choke should I use for 00 buckshot?
The best choke for buckshot is improved cyl and is effective out to 40yds. Anything tighter than that the pellets bounce off each other creating an irradic pattern. Shooting buckshot at a deer that is out of range in unethical.
How accurate are rifled slugs in a smooth barrel?
It mostly depends on the ammo you’re using, and also the gun/barrel. You could expect great accuracy when using brenneke slugs out of a barrel 20+ inches at 50-75 yards with ghost ring. You could still expect decent accuracy out to 100 yards, really though practice is the key.
